My mother in law, Becky came to Pittsburgh to help us out with the new baby for a whole week and a half! While we mostly hung around the house, (because it is nearly impossible to get the kids and me ready before noon around this place) we were able to do some fun stuff too. We went to Kirtland, OH for a day trip as well the Duquesne Incline to show off our city!
Kirtland, OH
Since I was feeling pretty good, we decided to drive to Kirtland one day when Josh had work off. The kids were (mostly) awesome and we really enjoyed seeing all the historic sights in Kirtland.
We started at the church's sights, beginning with the Newell K. Whitney Store. Our sister missionaries giving us the tour were super cute and weren't even scared to take our picture with my big, fancy camera.
While we took a TON of pictures of the inside of the place, I won't show them all because that is not as fun as actually going there. Instead I'm showing this one of bags of fake Barley and Bristles. I'm not sure what Bristles are and I'm not sure why I chose this picture to showcase the inside of the store. Perhaps I'm just tired and in a hurry to get this written before the kiddos wake up from their naps. Hmm. Bear with me here.
It was really neat though to see the place, especially to sit in the school of the prophets room.
It was small, particularly if you squishing 25 men in there.
I also didn't know many stories about the Whitney family, but my goodness. What a great example of giving so much to the church and always staying faithful.
Next, we toured the ashery where the saints would sell their fireplace ashes for 15 cents a bag and the heat and machinery would turn it into stones that sold for $200.00. We also toured the saw mill which cut the wood to build the inside structure of the temple, and where they made all the little pulpit things for the temple as well.
I thought the grounds were so beautiful! I wished it were a real neighborhood that I could really live in. It was so quaint and quiet.
Since we got there so late, we had to cut the tour short so we could run over to the Kirtland Temple tour (the last tour is at 4:30 p.m. just in case you are interested...)
A spunky, old Australian guy from the Community of Christ church gave us the tour. We spent a little time in their visitors center and then headed over to see the temple. It was beautiful!

No pictures were allowed inside, but we were able to see all three levels of the temple. We couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if our church owned it...
Duquesne Incline
On our way to the airport to drop Becky off, we stopped at the Duquesne Incline.
A must see for visitors!
